Pictionary Word Generator

Free Pictionary word generator. Random words to draw across 8 categories — animals, objects, food, actions, places, nature, characters, concepts. Reveal on tap, configurable timer.

When to use this

Pictionary is great for parties, classrooms, video calls, and family game nights. The category hint helps narrow guesses without giving the answer away — a balance most Pictionary decks miss.

How it compares

Compared to the official Pictionary decks, this generator is free, always available, and categorized for easier curation. Compared to other online generators, it shows the category as a hint and supports a configurable timer.

How it works

A random word is picked from a category-filtered pool. The word stays blurred — and shows its category as a hint — until the drawer taps Reveal.

Reveal starts the countdown timer. When time's up a buzzer plays and a banner appears.

Concept words ("love", "freedom") are deliberately included for challenge but can be skipped by selecting a specific concrete category.

FAQs

Do I need paper?

Yes — the generator picks words, but you need a whiteboard, paper, or shared digital canvas to draw on.

What does the category tag do?

It hints to guessers that the word is, say, an animal or a place. It narrows the search space without giving away the answer.

How long should a round be?

60 seconds works for most prompts. Concept words ("love", "freedom") may need 90+ seconds.

Can I focus on one category?

Yes — the category selector lets you pick animals only, food only, etc. Great for themed events.

Worked example

Input

Category: mixed · 60-second timer.

Output

Word: "Lighthouse" (place) — drawer reveals, timer starts.

The drawer taps Reveal, sees the word and its category hint, and starts sketching. Guessers shout out until the timer ends.

Common pitfalls

  • Concept words (love, friendship) are notoriously hard to draw — use the category selector to skip them.
  • A whiteboard, paper, or shared digital canvas is needed alongside the word generator.
  • Single-word prompts are easier for guessers than the multi-word Charades equivalent — adjust timer accordingly.
  • Audio plays after first user interaction (browser policy).
