The drawer taps Reveal, sees the word and its category hint, and starts sketching. Guessers shout out until the timer ends.
Concrete nouns with a distinctive silhouette are easy; abstract nouns and verbs are hard, and the gap between them is far wider than between common and uncommon words. "Elephant" is drawable by anyone at any skill level. "Justice" is not, regardless of how well known it is.
That is why difficulty tiers here track abstraction rather than obscurity, and why a mixed set produces better play than a set that is uniformly hard.
The standard restrictions — no letters, no numbers, no speaking, no gestures — exist to stop the game collapsing into an easier one. Without them players write the word or mime it, and the drawing becomes decoration.
The most commonly broken one is gesturing at the drawing, which is close enough to charades to change what is being tested. Agreeing it in advance is easier than ruling on it mid-round.
