Quand l’utiliser

Use the Scattergories generator at parties, family game nights, classrooms, or anywhere you want a quick, no-setup vocabulary game. The blurred-categories design means everyone sees the letter at the same moment as the start signal.

Comparaison

Most online Scattergories tools just spin a letter and offer one fixed category list. This one lets you vary the category count, difficulty, timer, and letter pool, and blurs categories until Start so the round really begins on cue.

Comment ça marche

On page load the generator picks a random letter (A–Z, optionally excluding Q/X/Z) and a configurable number of categories from a curated pool of about 250.

Categories stay blurred until you click Start. That click reveals them and starts the countdown — keeping the suspense of a real Scattergories round even when one device is shared.

When the timer hits zero, a buzzer sounds (Web Audio API, no external file) and a banner appears at the top of the screen. Categories stay visible so you can finish writing down ideas before resetting.

FAQ

How do I play Scattergories?

Each player needs paper and a pen. Everyone sees the same letter and categories. When the timer starts, write down one answer per category that begins with the letter. Score 1 point for any answer no other player matched.

Why are the categories blurred at first?

So the round really starts when you click Start — like a real Scattergories card flip. Otherwise players would have unfair advance time to think.

Why is the buzzer silent?

Browsers block audio until the user has interacted with the page. Once you've clicked Start at least once, the buzzer plays normally.

Can I change the timer?

Yes. Default is 3 minutes (180 sec). Configurable from 30 seconds to 15 minutes.

Why exclude Q, X, Z?

They make many categories nearly impossible. Toggle "Allow Q/X/Z" if your group enjoys hard rounds.

Exemple concret

Entrée

Letter: S · 12 categories selected from a pool of ~250.

Sortie

Categories: Animals · Foods · Movies · Things in a kitchen · Famous athletes · …

The letter and categories are picked when the page loads. Categories stay blurred until you press Start — that's when the 3-minute timer begins. A buzzer sounds when the round ends.

Pièges courants

  • Rare letters (Q, X, Z) make many categories nearly impossible — keep them disabled unless your group enjoys the chaos.
  • Easy difficulty trends toward concrete categories with many answers per letter; hard difficulty includes abstract and niche topics.
  • The timer continues even if you switch tabs — useful if you want to multitask, but watch the clock.
  • Audio only plays after the first user interaction (browser policy). Tap Start first if the buzzer is silent.
